Diversity and equity

In Analysis and plan of action – Diversity and equity, Merel Boas examines how organisations can become not only more diverse, but genuinely more equitable and inclusive.

The plan starts from a simple but essential insight: people differ from one another visibly and invisibly. Treating everyone in the same way therefore does not automatically do everyone equal justice. Equity requires organisations to develop an eye for individual differences, psychological safety, neurodiversity, group dynamics and the often unconscious biases that shape how we perceive and judge.

Drawing on her experience as a psychiatrist and adviser, Merel connects psychological and neurobiological insight to concrete organisational questions. She describes the role of managers, the influence of language and representation, the importance of listening, and the conditions under which people feel safe enough to speak up.

Awareness alone is not enough. Real change emerges when new insight carries through into behaviour, working processes and leadership. The policy plan therefore translates this view into practical measures for a psychologically safe working environment in which differences are not merely accepted, but recognised and put to use.
